
Huye comes alive as East Africa Schools Games start

Kenya has won 16 of the last East Africa School games editions
The 20th edition of the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association games gets underway across various venues in Huye, Rwanda.
Secondary Schools from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and the host Rwanda will battle for gold in the rugby sevens, rugby 15s, basketball, hockey, tennis, volleyball, netball, swimming, athletics, racquet games, football among other disciplines introduced to develop students’ talents.
The Kenyan schools will be looking to bring back the regional title they last won in 2018 but first, will have beat stiff competition from Uganda who, have been crowned overall champions two times in a row both in Arusha, Tanzania.
Uganda won a record 41 medals - 18 gold,10 silver and 13 bronze to pip Kenya, who settled for a second-place finish on 5 gold,12 silver and 4 bronze, in last year's edition of the school games.
This year's host Rwanda were placed third after collecting two gold, two silver and four bronze while Tanzania finished fourth on one silver and five bronze.
This year's edition is expected to incorporate some changes in a bid of making the event more memorable with a day set aside for cultural day and night where schools will showcase culture and tradition from their respective countries, that's according to the FEASSSA president Justus Mugisha.
Speaking at the Technical meeting held on Friday, the competitions' boss also revealed that the one-week event will be used as qualification games with top teams proceeding to the Africa Secondary Schools' games and ISF just like in the previous 2022 edition.
FEASSA secretary general David Ngugi who flanked the event chief whip, emphasized on the need of all participating schools to express high levels of disciplines during their stay in Rwanda.
The Kenyan contingent arrived in Huye on Thursday evening after leaving Busia and are expected to mount a tough challenge in reclaiming the coveted regional title from Uganda, who boost of a large representation.
Kenya has won 16 of the last East Africa School games editions, with the rival neighbours Uganda winning three and are the favourites once again.
Kenya's hopes in football lies with the girl’s discipline which has been won more times by a Kenyan team though football boys bragging rights has eluded the rich talent hub Kenya with St Mary's Kitende Uganda bagging it a record 14 times.
Kenya's third title chase in the boy’s category will start on Saturday as Nairobi representatives Dagoretti High School lock horns against Ecose Musambira before paving way for 2002 East Africa Secondary Schools games football boys champion St Anthony's Boys Kitale on Sunday who take on CGFK FC.
Debutants Friends School Shanderema are scheduled to start their maiden appearance at the regional stage with Amus College test on Sunday.
